Artist's Comments

(First of all, I don't have anything against furries/anthro).

Kemonomimi (AKA hybrids) are characters who have the ears (and sometimes tail, paws and other small features) of an animal. They are not furries, but perhaps a distant cousin of them. Some kemonomimi have more animal qualities than others, and because the line may be blurry at times, I can forgive people for sometimes not knowing the difference.

However, most kemonomimi are very obviously human, only having the ears (and tail). This is also sometimes considered to be "10% furry, but still not furry." Often times, Kemonomimi are entirely human, just wearing fake animal ears, tails or gloves shaped like paws. This is still considered Kemonomimi, but not hybrids.

Some fans of Kemonomimi may not be fans of Furry and vice versa. Please use these terms correctly~

Yes, while I like both "furry" stamped stuff and kemonomimi, I am of the opinion that it matters how you use words. :) There's a distinct difference between the concept of giving an animal human traits - and on the other hand giving a human animal traits. While all excess is vile, there's a point in keeping distinctions, if nothing else then so that all people talking about something know what the others are actually referring to. =P

...that's fine, too.

Also, the term "furry" is much wider and harder to define finitely than the term "kemonomimi". You hear it in the name; it's something with animal ears on it. (I know that a char with an animal tail counts too, but it's still much more narrow than "furry" which really includes - to some, at least - everything from the Lion King to Blacksad and branches out into adult art and on the other hand into kid's stuff like Care Bears. Furry often stands for some kind of spiritual / political / subculture approach to funny animals, and kemonomimi is much more simply a gimmick, a set of easily definable physical traits. )

No argument that "Furry" is a broad term. Although I am referring to the term as slang for "anthropomorphic" characters, the most stereotypical the reference gets. The sort of thing you'd find on FurAffinity : P
While Kemonomimi could either be considered a branch off of the whole "Furry" subculture, or even something in it's own category, it's still very different nonetheless.

I'd guess (spontaneously) that kemonomimi developed along its own track independent of "furry". The concept is sort of reversed.
